Seniors Managing Independent Living Easily
What is SMILE?
SMILE is a long-term functional support program for frail and elderly seniors most at risk of premature institutionalization to receive help with activities that are essential to daily living, allowing them to remain in their homes.
Because dignity is a matter of choice, SMILE offers these seniors option in managing their care, selecting services and deciding who comes into their home and when. The video below will provides a closer look at this exemplary program.
Creation of SMILE
On February 25, 2008 the South East LHIN Board of Directors approved the SMILE program with the selection of VON Canada – Ontario as the regional management centre for the program. This program was part of the government’s Aging at Home Strategy, which is aimed to reduce emergency department wait times and connect patient to family health care.

What services are provided?
Services must be related to activities of daily living such as:
- Routine housekeeping
- Laundry (including wash and fold services)
- Running errands
- Transportation to and from health care appointments
- Seasonal outdoor chores and grounds keep
Who is eligible?
SMILE assists frail and elderly seniors and the caregivers who support them. To be eligible a senior must:
- Require assistance with their activities of daily living
- Be at risk of increasing frailty
